“The Festival of Speed …brings together an impossibly heady mix of cars, stars and motor sport ‘royalty’ to create the largest car culture event in the world; this annual Hillclimb event is a true celebration of motor sport and all things automotive”
The Festival of Speed opens with the Moving Motor Show, which showcases the very latest models up close, and often with the opportunity to drive them on a dedicated route within the grounds of the Goodwood Estate, including the revered 1.16-mile Festival hill-climb. Top-end motor manufacturers who usually showcase their new models include Aston Martin, Abarth, Porsche, Ferrari, Audi and Mercedes Benz as well as the more accessible (and affordable) – Nissan, Peugeot, Citroen and Honda (to name but a few).
Goodwood House was built in 1697 by the first Duke of Richmond, son of King Charles ll. It has remained in the family and the current Earl of March has developed the estate to keep up with the emerging trends of the 21st century, focusing on the golf courses, organic farms and restoring the House to its former Regency glory as well as establishing the Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival as top events in the international sporting calendar.
Step Back In Time At The Revival
The Goodwood Revival takes place every September and is “truly a magical step back in time, celebrating the halcyon days of motor racing as it used to be, with all of the accompanying spectacle and glamour of the era. Competitors and spectators alike dress in period fashions, with the finest sights and entertainment of the pre-1966 era for all to enjoy”.
Perhaps if one of your party is not enamoured with the high octane aroma of petrol and the noisy rumble of motorised horsepower, Goodwood Estate also boasts beautiful walking tracks and sculpture trails and two golf courses (one Parkland, one Downland . Goodwood House is also open to the public and has an extensive art collection by artists such as Van Dyck, Canaletto, Reynolds, Romney, Stubbs, Lely, John and George Smith of Chichester.
Plus Horse Power Of A Different Kind
Of course, there is also horse racing at Goodwood. It starts with the May Festival followed by the Qatar Goodwood Festival, Previously known as Glorious Goodwood, this event takes places in late July or early August and is a five day event “of the world’s very best horses and jockeys…where racing and glamour take centre stage”. The season culminates with the Season Finale in October. Plus, there are a whole host of additional meets throughout the summer months.
So, remember to put these dates in your dairy and confirm your booking at Springwood ensuring the convenience of being within easy driving distance but away from both the heightened cost of accommodation in and around Goodwood – as well as the increased and amplified traffic!
